Cabo San Lucas— Monday 12/2/19

December 3, 2019

In the wee hours of Monday morning, I woke up breathing fire. I peeled myself out of bed to take heart burn meds and drink some Alka Seltzer. Propping up my pillows, I slept the rest of the night in a semi-seated position.

In the waking hours of the morning, between the lingering hearburn, upset stomach from too many carbs, and disappointing dives, I decided to opt out of the day of diving.

Instead I was able to enjoy the free breakfast that The Bungalows offers. When I walked into the restaurant, Dave from the day before was there, and offered me a seat with him. There were some friendly worldly travelers at the table across from us, and as Dave had taken his fair share of trips abroad, the three of them compared travel notes, and I listened in awe as I imagined camping in Africa with a growling lion outside of my tent.Read More →

La Paz—Sunday 12/1/19

December 2, 2019

On Sunday we woke up during the dark hours for our trip to La Paz for whale shark snorkeling and diving with sea lions in the Sea of Cortez!

We arrived at the diveshop before 6:00 am to meet our fellow explorers, a Canadian couple with French accents, and Dave, who we discovered is also staying at The Bungalows Hotel. Our fearless leader for the day was Julio.

The three of us were somehow under the impression it was a two hour boat ride to La Paz, so we were pleasantly surprised to find out it was a two hour car ride. And we were in a cozy van. No school bus business this time.Read More →

Cabo San Lucas—Saturday 11/30/19

December 1, 2019

After diving, Kristen miraculously felt better. Probably because she had nothing left to puke up.

We went to Las Guacamayas for lunch, which was recommended to us by our shuttle driver on the way from the airport. I had fish tacos, which were excellent, and a chocolate churro. Kristen tried to take a sip of my strawberry daquiri but I put the kibosh on that real fast. One sip leads to a drink, which leads to more vomiting. And after coercing her into drinking two margaritas on Thursday, I felt it was time to be the responsible friend and cut her off.

We had some down time after lunch. Kristen kept all her food down. For dinner we went to Restaurant Bar 22:10. The waiter recommended the filet mignon. Since I’d been having luck with recommendations I agreed, despite my apprehension of restaurant steak. I should have went with my instincts. Kristen’s coconut shrimp looked way more delicious.

We headed to bed early as the next day we were heading to La Paz and had a 5:45 am pick up time.

Los Morros, Dive 93

December 1, 2019

Dive: 93
Cabo Dive: 4
Date: 11/30/19
Site:Los Morros
Avg/Max Depth: 45/54
Temp: 77
TBT/CBT: 0:41/76:57
Weight: 18 lbs
Buddies: Curtis, Kristen
Addt’l Info: 3 mil shorty

For the second dive of the day, we went to Los Morros. I felt bad for poor Kristen. Nothing like being pukey and having to sit on a boat.

There were lots more fish on this dive than what we’ve been seeing. Cabo is home to some of the largest puffer fish I have ever seen. Lots of schools of fish on this dive too. I must have entered a fish cleaning station a couple of times, because the cleaning fish descended on my bare calves. It took me a while to figure out what was happening. I kept thinking I brushed some coral or someone’s flippers, only to turn around and see nothing. I didn’t hate it.

Visibility at the beginning of the dive was the same, but it got cloudier during the end.

Whale’s Head, Dive 92

December 1, 2019

Dive: 92
Cabo Dive: 3
Date: 11/30/19
Site:Whale’s Head
Avg/Max Depth: 32/44
Temp: 77
TBT/CBT: 0:47/76:16
Weight: 18 lbs
Buddies: Curtis, Kristen
Addt’l Info: 3 mil shorty

Our second day of diving was scheduled to be in the corridor, so we went back to Whale’s Head. We passed by another dive site in the corridor first, but Sanne said she could tell the water was too murky.

This time we were joined by Andrea and John, a couple from Texas. Unfortunately Kristen’s sickness from the night before came back in full force on the boat. She was tossing cookies while we were preparing for the dive, and made a valient attempt at getting in the water in hopes that it was motion sickness from being on the boat. But alas, 30 seconds on the surface had her swimming back to the boat.

We continued with the dive, and it was much the same as the day before.
