Boo’s Surgery

On a random Tuesday in November, I watched as Boo tried, and failed, to eat her dinner. She would open her mouth in an attempt to eat, but then she would pause an inch above her plate. Sometimes she’d shake her head; other times she would tilt her head sideways and chomp her teeth. Boo had never been one to scarf down her food, but it was obvious that there was something severely wrong. I called the vet minutes before they closed and scheduled an appointment for the next morning.

I gave her food all night, and I felt awful because she clearly wanted to eat but either couldn’t or wouldn’t. The next morning she ate, although reluctantly. I started to question my decision to bring her to the vet, as the last time I brought her in when she wasn’t eating there was nothing wrong with her and she fought them so hard that her previous back injury flaired up for a couple days. But that was different because she had no appetite. This time it seemed like she really wanted to eat.

Meet Breezy

December 2, 2016

Breezy blew into our lives on October 3. She’s a one-year-old tortoiseshell with plenty of tortitude. I brought her home after three weeks of seeing her at PetSmart. PetSmart isn’t a store I frequent, but I needed cat food for Boo, and I didn’t want to fight traffic to get to our independent pet supply store. I took a detour past the rescue cat cages and saw her there, sleeping in her cage. All the cats looked adorbs, and I felt for all of them, but there was something about Breezy that captivated me so much that I returned to the store four times in the next three weeks. Every time part of me hoped she would be gone, while another part wondered if it would be possible to introduce a new cat into Boo’s home. I found a post about her on Angel of Hope’s Facebook Page, and even asked for more information concerning her attitude toward other cats.

Boo Turns 15!

This month, Boo turns 15 years old! Wow. It’s hard to believe how fast time passes. It’s also hard to believe that I’m old enough to have had a cat in my adult life for 15 years. If she were a human, she’d be begging to drive my car and otherwise unruly. Fortunately the most unruly things she does are puke on the carpet and demand to be let into the bathroom whenever she’s on the opposite side of the closed door.

Boo hasn’t slowed down too much, and she’s still as evil as ever, which I take to mean she will live FOREVAR! She isn’t a fan of photos, hence the glare in the one above. Or maybe it was because she knew I was going to close her window. Regardless, every time she does something cute she stops the minute I point the camera at her.

Despite not approving of people in general, Boo’s an amazing kitty. I’m very fortunate to have stumbled across her in the humane society. Here’s to many more years!

A night at Katie’s

Because Smitty’s bachelor party was at my house this weekend, Nick gave me the boot on Saturday night. I ended up hanging out with my friend Katie and spending the night at her place. Actually, I kind of invited myself over, but that didn’t affect the end result.

We went to Flame for dinner, picked up snacks and movies (The Kids Are All Right and The Social Network), and then headed back to Katie’s really awesome downtown house/condo thingy that looks nothing like a living space from the outside.

I ended up sleeping on the couch with Katie’s cat, Keira. She’s this really cute fluffy thing that let me do things Boo doesn’t, like rub her fuzzy underbelly and stick my fingers between her toes. When I fell asleep she was on my chest, and when I woke up she was between my legs. I’m not a back sleeper, and as much as I didn’t want to disturb her, I had to move. I tried to bend my knee so I could flip on my side with her behind my legs, but she was somehow attached to my leg and moved with me. I felt bad, but I ended up having to push her off. Unlike Boo, she didn’t run away when I shifted positions. She simply sprawled out to take up more space on the couch. I ended up curling myself up and sleeping in a little ball. Her ability to not move the entire night was really impressive.

The evening was fun, even with the kink in my neck from catering to the cat’s sleeping needs, and I totally intend on inviting myself over again some day. Katie, be forewarned. :)
