Nick & My 4th Anniversary

April 14, 2010

For our 4th anniversary this year, Nick and I are celebrating by… well, nothing in particular.

So instead of celebrating with fancy dinners or tropical second honeymoons, I decided to post a video.

By popular demand – and by popular demand I mean me – here is the video of my dress getting caught in the escalator:

Twilight7

February 28, 2009

On February 13th I saw Twilight in theaters for the 7th time. By no choice of my own, mind you. I was practically forced by four of my friends: Sarah and Kristy who had just read the book, Michelle who was in the process of reading and Tara who was reading Breaking Dawn. For the record, it is just as good the 7th time around and Robert Pattinson is just as swoon worthy.

Fortunately the movie was only $3 this time since it had moved to the discount theater. Woo-hoo!! Of course the popcorn is just as expensive. Bastards. The five of us enjoyed the movie and then went to dinner afterward. We wanted to go to Champps but they were charging a cover (WTF?) so we opted for Houlihan’s instead. I enjoyed some delicious meatloaf. It was nice to have some fresh minds to discuss the book and movie with. In retrospect I should have driven with Tara alone so we could have discussed the other books. Instead we had to bite our tongues and be hush hush as not to ruin it for the slackers others who hadn’t read the series. But they will, just like Renee will eventually read Twilight. :o

Twilight comes out on DVD in three weeks and I’ve preordered the Border’s special edition copy. Nice.

Twilight5 & Twilight6

January 15, 2009

I saw Twilight for the 5th time last Friday night with my sister Lani and niece-in-law Megan. Lani had read the first two books, but Megan was a Twilight virgin. The movie was enjoyed by all. I thought the theater was still quite busy for the movie having been out for 7 weeks, but I suppose not everyone is a superfan like me who rushed out to see it on opening weekend. Of course, I was curious as to how many people in the theater had already seen it. Apparently the dad in the family sitting in front of us hadn’t seen it before, because he kept leaning over and asking his daughter questions.

I fully intended on stopping at 5 times. It seemed like a good number, and more than enough times to tide me over until the DVD comes out in March. But Blog Reader Kristen left me a comment that she was interested in seeing it again. Apparently she had to see it again to make up for that disgusting display in Grand Cayman, which it didn’t seem like she wanted to count in her total Twilight viewings. I drove to Cloud on Saturday night so we could see it there. Curtis accompanied us as well, not having enough Alice is my guess. That or he wanted to monitor our swooning, keep us in line. Somebody has to. I swooned over Edward as usual, but Kristen fully swooned over baseball Jasper.

My journey into Twilight

January 5, 2009

Alternate titles:
• Jilly loves the vamps
• Longest blog post ever
• My four favorite books of all time

Nope, I was not immune to the Twilight phenomenon. Here is my story.

It all started back in August. I was listing to one of my favorite podcasts, Grammar Girl: Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. This was the advertisement at the end of the podcast (no I didn’t type it, I copied it from the transcript):

Before you go, Twilight was the caller and coincidentally Twilight is also the book I’m reading this week. Are you surprised? It’s not Pride and Prejudice, but I believe it’s important to stay current with pop culture and the four books in the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer are some of the hottest things on the market right now. They know I’m Grammar Girl at the local bookstore here in Reno and they actually gave me a little grief for buying this book, so maybe the best thing about it being one the free options you can get when you sign up at Audible is that you can buy it online–privately! Audible has over 40,000 audiobooks and they have all four audiobooks in the saga from the first, Twilight, to the most recent, Breaking Dawn; so whether you’re just jumping onto the Stephanie Meyer bandwagon or you’re a devoted fan, they’ve got the right book for you. Visit audiblepodcast.com/gg to sign up for an account and get your free audiobook today. That’s audiblepodcast.com/gg.

Conveniently I subscribe to Audible.com and at the time had an abundance of credits that I wasn’t sure what to use on. Hmmm… Grammar Girl got teased, buy online privately, sounded like a guilty pleasure to me, and I’m all about guilty pleasures. I forgot I bought Twilight pretty much immediately after the download process was complete and went about the remainder of my summer in a non-audiobook/book sort of fashion.

Crossroads, dive 28

December 2, 2008

Dive: 28
Cayman Dive: 4
Date: 12/2/08
Site: Crossroads, South Side, Grand Cayman
Avg/Max Depth: 23/42
Temp: 79
TBT/CBT: 0:37/21:58
Buddies: Nick, Kristen, Curtis, Ted

Our second dive site for the day was Crossroads. It was to be our shallow dive. Jon let the 11 of us dive without him. Our instructions were to swim around the reef with a max depth of 40-50 feet for no longer than 40 minutes. Seemed simple enough. We decided to follow Curtis since he has the mad directional skillz. No dumbheadedness from me on this dive, I got in the water right away to make up for the previous dive.

This dive was a bit more relaxing than the last one for me. I prefer swimming over the reef to swimming on a wall. I like to look below me while I swim about, it’s a more natural position for my neck, and on a wall there’s not much to look at below. My camera battery was going dead and it was shutting off on me the entire dive, but I was determined to be patient and get good fish photos. Photos of the same types of coral gets monotonous after awhile. I think I did good, better than normal anyway, but not as good as Curtis.

On the way back to the boat, the videographer pointed out a giant lobster. I descended a bit to take a peek. That’s when my ear started to ache. For the remainder of the dive I tried to stay at 12 feet so it wouldn’t bother me.

Kristen and I were the first to board the boat. She was parched, and my ear was telling me it was time to wrap it up.

Slowly everyone filtered in… except for one guy. His wife came aboard, he apparently wasn’t ready to quit yet. We waited, and waited. They knew he was alright because they could see his bubbles swimming around the boat. It went from being humorous to quite irritating. I’m sure it had been at least 30 minutes since everyone else had boarded. After trying various attempts at getting his attention, Jon reluctantly took off his warm jacket (swoon), grabbed his mask and fins and moped to the back of the boat, hesitating before diving in. It only took a few seconds, Jon was back on the boat, looking disappointed to be wet, and the rogue diver climbed up after him. Apparently he thought we were supposed to swim around until we reached 500 psi. WTF? At every dive briefing I’ve ever had the divemaster has said come up with no less than 500. That’s like the danger line. Industry standard minimum. How could he misinterpret that? We’re all certified divers, I assume he learned the same basic safety principles as everyone else. And where was the little voice in his head that should have been saying, “I’m down here all alone, this isn’t right”? I felt bad for his wife, I’m pretty sure she was embarrassed by the whole situation.

At least it gave an ample opportunity to completely dry off before the windy boat trip back. It was still overcast, but the air felt warmer, especially being dry.
