30 Days of Thanks – Day #17

November 17, 2012

I don’t think anything beats online shopping. Going to a store is too much of a hassle—parking and lines and people and waiting and people and being stuck outside in winter and crowds and people… I have better things to do with my time. I order everything online: groceries, clothes, shoes, cat food, makeup, etc. If there’s a store website, I’m on it. And if there’s not, there’s always Amazon.

The best part about online shopping is that you can find things you’d never see anywhere else. For instance, a week ago I had no idea this Edward mug existed, and now it’s mine!

30 Days of Thanks – Day #16

November 16, 2012

I honestly can’t imagine going back to life before ereaders, so today I’m giving thanks to my Kindle!

OMG, seriously, what did I do before I had a Kindle? Let’s see. First I had to get to the library or bookstore, which was a pain. Either that or I had to place an order online. And wait two whole days! Then once I had a book, well… there was the whole part about dealing with the book. Books are bulky, so it’s not like I’d haul it around with me on a daily basis. I usually left it on my nightstand. Not so great when unexpectedly stuck in a waiting room somewhere and the only thing to read are crappy, two-month-old tabloids. Traveling sucks too. Paper is surprisingly heavy! After finishing a book, it takes up space. I could get rid of it, but what if I wanted to read it again? (Which admittedly I rarely do, but that’s beside the point.)

Now I have a Kindle. I can buy a book directly on it or online and have it automatically delivered. Not only that, but it syncs with my iPhone and iPad, so I’m never stuck without something to read, and I never lose my place.

Do I still buy paper books? Sure, but it happens pretty rarely these days.

The only downfall with a Kindle is if you step on it, you better have some form of backup entertainment.

30 Days of Thanks – Day #15

November 15, 2012

I know this may seem like an eye rolling thing to be thankful for, but I’m thankful for Twilight.

I don’t mean I’m thankful for sparkly, swoon-worthy vampires, epic love stories, Robert Pattinson (though I am, technically), or anything else like that. No, I’m thankful for Twilight because of the friendships I’ve formed over it.

Twilight was the ice-breaker that TwiSarah and I used to rekindle our friendship after 15 years. After having her back in my life, I can’t imagine not having her as a friend. She is my life now.

In December 2009, TwiSarah and I went to Vegas to be a part of a New Moon parody. That’s where we first met Mary, who is totally awesome. Mary came to visit us last December, and this past summer I met her in California, where we had a fun, Disney-filled weekend.

Sometime in 2010, Ashley started stalking me on the Internet. I’m pretty sure that’s how it began, anyway. Fast forward to two years later. I thought, what better way to stalk her back than inviting myself to her house for a weekend? In Kansas. When her hubs was away doing military things. I’m pretty people feared for my life. It turned out okay, though, because Ash and I had a super awesome weekend where we did nerdy things like watch the Breaking Dawn Part 1 RiffTrax.

There are many other people whom I consider good friends even though we’ve never met in person. I hope to meet them all someday. <333

30 Days of Thanks – Day #14

November 14, 2012

I’m thankful for girls’ nights out. For the past couple of years, a small group of us has set aside one night a month to go to dinner and catch up. It’s nice.

I don’t have any girls’ night photos, but here’s my dessert from Wednesday night. #goodenough

30 Days of Thanks – Day #13

November 13, 2012

Today I’m thankful for dance, even if I did come home with a giant hole in the ball of my foot.

I find it hard to express exactly how dance makes me feel and what it means to me. It was something I did growing up. I didn’t start until I was 11, and I was never great at it, but I loved doing it. This is my sixth year in the young adults class at the same studio I attended while growing up. The dynamic has totally changed, but I don’t love doing it any less. In fact, I think dancing as an adult is more enjoyable than a teenager, because instead of it being something I have to do instead of… well, whatever ’90s teenagers did, it’s something I get to do. For 90 minutes, I get to forget about everything outside that studio. I get to challenge myself to learn something new or perfect something old. I get to don shoes with metal on the bottom and make beautiful floor music.

Sure sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes I can’t walk the next day. Sometimes I sprain things. Sometimes I rip giant holes in my feet. None of that is going to stop me.

Getting older isn’t going to stop me either. I understand now what adults had meant when they talked about things getting harder as we age. Some things are harder now, but you know what? It was hard back then too, just a different kind of hard. I notice the differences, but I don’t let that limit me.

This reminds me of the lyrics to a Toby Keith song: I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.

I wish I had some pictures to post here, past and present, but I unfortunately don’t have any handy.
