Blackout

November 12, 2007

Last week I purchased a copy of Britney Spears’ new album Blackout. I really wasn’t thrilled to get it, but I’ve been a fan for so long I felt rather obligated. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a super-fan of hers like I am of Christian Slater, nor am I crazy for her like Chris Crocker a.k.a. Britney Boy is.

My initial impression of the album was that it was alright. All the songs are upbeat dance tracks, no ballads. It seemed as though there was something missing though. For a lack of a better way to explain it, the album felt empty. Cookie cutter if you will. Not what you’d expect from the icon who is Britney Spears. But considering all the publicity surrounding her lately it wasn’t very surprising. I’m not calling the album bad. In fact it is growing on me quite rapidly. The music itself is pretty catchy. The melodies of a lot of the songs are rather monotone and more talk-singing than actual singing. That’s not to say that she doesn’t sing in a lot of the songs. In fact, it seems that the singing is either very monotone or very harmonized either with backup singers or by multiple tracks of Britney singing*. The themes of the songs seem to revolve around sex, which is only mildly irritating and, again, isn’t surprising.

Perhaps the reason I felt the album was lacking something was because at first I had a difficult time visualizing the put together, sexy Britney of the past. Instead I had the mental image in my head of her dispassionate VMA performance, along with the knowledge of all the bad publicity she has received lately. And not just run of the mill bad, but the “you aren’t fit to be alone with your children” bad. And if the lyrics of your song are going to be “guess I can’t see the harm in working and being a mama and with a kid on my arm” … I don’t know, it just rubs the wrong way.

After listening to the album a few times, the songs started growing on me and the image of Bad Britney slowly started to fade. I’ve taken quite a liking to “Break the Ice” (track #4) and “Freak Show” (track #7), which both have super harmonized choruses. Something about “Freak Show” reminds me of “She Bangs” (the Ricky Martin version, not the William Hung version). And the chorus of “Break the Ice” has a beautiful sound, which pairs uniquely with the sex-themed upbeat tempo. Tracks 3, 6, 10 & 11 are starting to grow on me also. Although I don’t care for a couple of the tracks, they are still listenable, which says a lot considering music these days (does that make me sound old?).

I think Blackout is a good album. I’m glad that I purchased it and will probably listen to it a lot. If Britney had kept a clean image in these past few months I think the album would have sold much more copies. After all, pop music is image based. The image doesn’t have to be clean, just appealing in some way.

*I’m torn on the whole multiple track thing. For starters, she is a solo artist. Backup singers to help carry a melody are one thing, but if you’re going to sound like a group, go be in a group. It also makes performing live a bit awkward sounding. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds pretty cool on the CD, but at the same time it makes it really hard to sing along to. Which part am I supposed to sing along to while in the car? I can’t sing them all. Maybe I could rig up my computer to make my own multitrack recording of song #4. That would be lots o fun.

And as a side note to my side note, my dad recently gave me a little history lesson on music where I learned about the history of 8-tracks. Apparently the multitrack recording phenomenon started back in the day because it was too expensive to pay multiple singers. Somewhere down the line of our overpriced music industry, it must have been decided that eight of a good thing are better than one.

New Christmas Tree

November 4, 2007

I spent yesterday cleaning the basement and putting up my Christmas Tree. Yes, my Christmas Tree is officially up. Nick wasn’t too happy about it. He thought maybe I wasn’t sure what month it was. I think he’s jealous ’cause he doesn’t have a Christmas Tree. My original intentions were to put it up on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is when I believe the Christmas season should start (vote in my new poll), but then I remembered we’d be in Belize in December, so that’s 10 days that we wouldn’t get to enjoy it, and since Christmas is on the 25th, that’s almost half of the month. Besides, we haven’t had a tree up for about four years, so I’m making up for lost time.

This tree is my first official fake tree. I’ve always liked real trees, they look and smell so… real. But they are also really pokey. And really messy (we’re still finding needles from four years ago). And really sappy. Which means I get really sappy. And the cat gets really sappy. Ears all stuck to the side of her head and such. I got this tree after Christmas last year. It was on clearance. I don’t remember exactly how much it was or what I bought it for, but I do remember it being quite the deal. It’s one of those pre-lit trees that are supposed to stay lit of a bulb burns out. It looks nice too.

It was also a pain in the ass to get. Read More →

Halloween

November 1, 2007

Once again, Nick stood me up on Halloween night and I was forced to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters all by myself. I’ll have to admit it wasn’t as bad as it was in previous years. In the last two years we had 40-50 kids spread out over the entire night, which makes it really hard to do anything like watch tv, go to the bathroom, or just get comfortable on the couch. This year there were only 14 kids until about 8:30, then the night concluded with three very large groups, so it was a pretty relaxing night. Let me interject here that I have a completely irrational anxiety about answering the door. It just plain creeps me out. So top that off with knowing there are going to be small children on the other side… eeeesh. I’m not saying I believe in past lives, but if I did live in a previous life I was probably murdered by someone who rang my doorbell.

Anyway, one of the first kids was in a giraffe suit, and I like giraffes, so the night started off on a good foot. Not to mention he was a polite little giraffe. He said “thank you” even though I really couldn’t decipher what he said. But hey, I give him props for actually walking on his own and not having his parents carry him around. Although it was early, and I don’t really know what goes on once I close the door. And it’s funny how parents do things differently. Some walk right up to the door with their children while some hang back a ways. Then of course at the end of the night the big kids show up. This group of guys showed up with so much candy they asked if I could spare any plastic bags. The last person I had was a girl dressed up like a bunny. She was all alone and looked to be about 14 or so. It made me think, who trick-or-treats alone? It’s one thing if you’re a small kid accompanied by only your parents, but to go completely alone? It’s just weird. The only logical conclusion I could come up with was that none of her friends went trick-or-treating because they felt they were too old. Or maybe it was a dare. Or maybe she lost a bet.

Anyway, moving on, I think the fact that we are still in daylight savings time messed up the trick-or-treating schedule. Usually I barely have time to get candy and get home before the kids start showing up. I’m sure it sucks for the kids, I remember the wait for it to get dark out was long enough, but patience is a virtue, so we’ll be raising a well rounded society of people going door to door demanding candy.

Like I said, I’m not turning jillapalooza.com into a crazy cat video site, but Nick keeps sending them to me, and since my number 1 blog reader (Kristen) demanded more cat videos, I feel obligated to post this…
